Once inside, they used the keycard to gain access to the Presidential floors and the rooms there. Ellis didn’t try to kiss her once while they were in the elevator. He only continued to hold her hand.
When they reached their floor, the ‘ding’ was especially loud because they were so quiet. After it opened, he moved to the side and allowed Haven to get off first, then walked out behind her.
Haven’s heart was beating a mile a minute because she knew this time there weren’t going to be any interruptions.
They finally made it to their room, and Ellis used his special key to open the door. The moment it closed behind them, he had Haven up against the door capturing her mouth in a fiery kiss. It was filled with pent up desire, pain, grief, and so much more.
His hands were all over her. Even though she basked in his touch, Haven remembered this feeling well after the loss of her child—only Dylan wasn’t there for her.
She knew Ellis’ raw need to feel connected, to feel alive. Haven had wanted their first time to be different, but at this moment, she didn’t care. Haven only wanted to soothe his soul and hers. She was also saddened by the loss of Ms. McKenna.
Ellis grabbed the hem of her dress and Haven lifted her arms so that he could pull it up and over her head. He tossed it somewhere across the room.
She stood in only a lace bra and panty.
Ellis backed up to let his eyes feast on her for a moment. As his hot gaze traveled her body, he spoke as if talking to himself. “You’re the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen.” Their eyes locked when he brought them back to hers.
He reached for her and Haven came willingly into his arms. As if she were the most precious thing in the world, Ellis laid her gently onto the center of the bed. Then, he took off his clothes.
Haven swallowed at the sight of a completely naked Ellis McKenna. His entire body was chiseled. There literally wasn’t an ounce of fat on the man. What was even more impressive was how his member jutted up past his navel. Haven had no idea how someone his size was going to fit inside of her, but she was going to find out very soon.
Ellis crawled on top of Haven and spread her legs apart with his knees. Her legs came up to his sides, and she lifted as he hooked his thumbs into the sides of her thong and pulled it down. Haven squirmed until she was able to use her toes to kick her underwear completely off.
She inhaled sharply when her naked flesh came in direct contact with his. Ellis used that opportunity to slide his tongue inside her mouth. His kisses were potent like a drug.
Haven wiggled and writhed underneath him barely able to wait to be taken. She ran her hands up and down his back grazing it with her nails.
He trailed a path of hot kisses down her body until he came to her breasts. Ellis pulled one of her hard tips into his mouth and bit down on it almost to the point of pain. Haven arched her back up off the mattress. She moaned and called out to him. “Mmm . . . Ellis.”
He loved the way she said his name. It did something to his heart.
Ellis unhooked her bra and removed it. He took the other nipple into his mouth without the barrier of the lace, showing it no mercy.
Haven dug her fingers into his hair. The pleasure was too intense.
The sucking noise echoing throughout the room was such a turn on. He was equally aroused, and Haven couldn’t be sure if the juices at the apex of her thighs belonged to him or her.
After Ellis had satisfied his craving of tasting her, he continued the exploration of her body licking and kissing his way down to her stomach, then lower, until his lips finally hovered over her liquid heat.
Haven could feel his breath. He felt so good that she used her thighs to hold his head in place, urging him on to place his lips on her. He was so close but too far. Instinctively, she lifted her hips in an attempt to hurry him along.
Instead of giving Haven what she wanted, his head dipped into the soft triangle of curls covering her sex, and he inhaled her scent.
Haven thought she was going to die if he didn’t make love to her soon. The anticipation was so great that the beginnings of an orgasm were already starting to form.
Instead of using his tongue to make love to her, Ellis deprived her of that satisfaction. He continued to lick every inch of her body as he moved away from her treasure and descended even lower. He seemed to be enjoying the taste and feel of her almost as much as she enjoyed being tasted.
As Ellis started to make his way back up the gift that was her body, his husky voice spoke into the darkness. “I missed a spot. It’s hard to kiss everywhere like this.”
He pulled her legs over his shoulders and kissed the soft underside of her knees then turned, placing his face at the center of her body.
The next thing Haven knew, Ellis’s mouth closed around her sex. Something akin to a squeal escaped her. He. Ate. Her. Up.
His licks were hot, wet, and long. He stroked her from the top all the way down to her opening, over and over again. “You taste so fuckin’ good. I knew you would.”
She couldn’t breathe. All Haven could do was crush the sheets between her fingers as her head thrashed from side to side. When Ellis swirled his tongue around her tight little bud, Haven saw stars. She exploded into a million little pieces. Even then, Ellis continued to eat his fill.
A light sheen of perspiration formed on her body. Haven had never orgasmed from oral sex in her life. She was still floating on a cloud when Ellis slid her legs down and began to crawl up her body. He nestled himself between her thighs as he took her mouth in his.
Haven tasted herself in his kisses, and it was the most erotic thing she’d ever experienced. While she was lost in his kiss, Ellis lined himself up to her entrance and surged inside.
He growled. She thought she did too.
The gentleness she’d experienced only moments before had been replaced with aggressive and powerful thrusts. Haven had been craving this moment for so long that the muscles of her body clenched around him like a glove.
His voice was rough. “Damn, you feel so good.”
When he said he could break her, Haven could now attest that it was no lie. He stretched and filled her almost to the point she wasn’t sure if she could handle all of him. She would, though. Haven would take whatever pounding he dished out.
Their moans filled the room. He thrust into her heat only to pull almost all the way out then to slam right back inside. The sound was like music to both their ears. The intensity and the pace began to pick up. The wet sounds of Ellis moving in and out of her only fueled them both on.
He threaded his fingers with hers, and their kisses began to mimic the frenzied pace of their lovemaking. He broke the kiss and with a strangled plea whispered into her ear, “Cum for me, baby.”
Ellis was doing his best to hold on, but denying himself of her for all this time—with the pulsing of her body around him, and the sound of his body slamming against her as he used every ounce of strength to pump into her was enough to drive him over the edge.
Ellis hit her g-spot . . . once . . . twice . . . and a third time. She squeezed her eyes shut and cried out. As if it were even possible, he was able to drive into Haven even harder. Moments later, he found his own release. He erupted into Haven’s spasming walls, and that was when Ellis realized he wasn’t wearing a condom.
He didn’t freak out. All he could do was collapse on top of her. Gently, Ellis kissed her on the lips. Haven was probably on the pill, but Ellis should have asked. It was too late now. Unfortunately, he could only deal with one crisis at a time. And, right now, that was getting through the death of his grandmother without losing his mind.
Haven snuggled up next to Ellis as she lay in the crook of his arms. It didn’t take long before she started to drift off to sleep. Contentedly, she sighed and whispered into the darkness, “I’m falling in love with you.”
He froze. “W-what?”
Haven didn’t respond.
Ellis looked down into her face. She didn’t say anything because she was as
leep.
*****
Hours later, sleep wouldn’t find him. His body may have been satisfied, but his soul was restless. Ellis glanced down at a sleeping Haven and ran his hands down her naked body. She looked peaceful.
He watched her sleep for most of the night. She was falling in love with him? That was crazy, absurd even. He didn’t even do girlfriends. How the hell was he going to do love?
Love was too painful. Needing to calm his mind, Ellis got up and dressed then stepped out onto the balcony.
Haven awakened to an empty bed. She sat up pulling the sheets with her to cover her naked body. She looked around the room to see Ellis was almost fully dressed standing outside.
It was cold. Still, Haven got out of the bed keeping the sheet wrapped around her and went out onto the balcony too.
Ellis heard her the moment she started to slide the door back. Barefoot, Haven walked up to him and pressed her cheek against his back while wrapping her arms around his waist. “Hey.”
His tone was still somber. “Hey.”
She hugged him tighter. “Did you get any sleep?”
“Not much.” Ellis continued to look out into the distance.
“It may not seem like it now, but, each day you open your eyes, you’ll survive.”
They stood silently for a few more moments.
Ellis blew out an exhausted sounding breath. “We should probably get going.”
Something in his tone made Haven stiffen.
“Okay. Whatever you want to do.”
“Haven, thank you for last night.”
She prayed it meant something to him other than just sex. Haven kissed his back and decided to take the biggest risk of her life. “You don’t have to thank me. I wanted to be here for you because . . . I . . . I love you.” Her arms loosened.
Ellis squeezed his eyes shut. “Damn, Haven. Don’t do this.” He finally turned so that she could see his eyes.
“Don’t do what? Tell you how I feel? I’m not afraid of us—anymore.”
“My grandmother hasn’t even been in the ground for a week. I still have shit to tie up regarding her estate. I’m not sure if I can handle anything else.”
“I’m not asking for anything. I just want you to let me be here for you.”
“The reading of the will is going to take a few days.” He paused. “After that, I’m leaving for a while.”
Haven backed away slightly. “For how long?”
“I can’t say. All I know is my head is messed up, but there are certain things I’m sure of. I’m sure I’ll never be ready to be a husband. I know that. As much as I care for you, I can’t give you what I know you want and need.”
Ellis completely shredded the remaining bit of her hope and her heart. “Care for me?”
Ellis couldn’t look at her. “I’m not capable of anything more than that. I’m not sure I ever will be.” The wind almost carried the sound of his voice away.
She had taken a gamble and lost. He didn’t love her. Haven couldn’t be angry because Ellis had always told her the truth. She had given him everything, and it wasn’t enough.
For a while, they just both stood there. The wind whipped her hair into her face, and she pushed it behind her ears. Haven knew she should be freezing, but she was so numb she didn’t feel anything. Ellis was grieving, she knew that, and he was pushing her away. Maybe this is what Dylan meant when he said she was so deep in her grief that he couldn’t reach her. She couldn’t reach Ellis.
Finally, Haven was able to find her voice. She reached out and caressed the side of his face. Her voice was soft. “I’m sorry too.”
She turned around and went back inside. It didn’t take long for her to get dressed. Moments later, Haven left with her heart in her hands.
Ellis watched her go, knowing that, over time, she would realize he’d done her the biggest favor. He’d lied and told her that he didn’t love her when, for the first time in his life, he’d known he was in love. But, love didn’t last. It only served to choke those who remained behind to deal with their loss.
It was better this way.
Ellis made a promise to his grandmother that he would honor. Even if he couldn’t be in Haven’s life romantically, he would always watch over her and make sure she was taken care of. He owed her that much. He loved her that much.

The snow was starting to fall, and the temperature had dropped considerably. Vanessa had been sitting in her car with the heat blasting for an over an hour. She was beginning to think her meeting wasn’t going to take place. Just when she was about to give up, Vanessa saw him. His dark sedan drove up next to hers.
Quickly, she got out, walked over to his car, and opened the passenger side door. Pissed, she peered inside. “You’re late!”
“I really don’t think you want to use that tone with me. Get in.”
Vanessa did as she was told. “Don’t forget I’m doing you the favor.” She waved her hand in front of his face. “I’m going to make this quick because I’ve wasted enough time waiting for you today. What’s the status between you and Haven?”
Dylan shrugged. “I’m making progress.”
“Progress? What does that mean?” Vanessa was frustrated. “I never would have told you about the money Bertha left her if I didn’t think you couldn’t get her out of my way.”
“Don’t worry about me. I’ll keep up my end of the bargain. You need to worry about Pretty Boy McKenna. He can’t seem to keep himself away from her. Lucky for you, I know Haven like the back of my hand. I know what she wants and what she needs.”
“Are you sure about that? It seems to me that Haven is drawn to Ellis too. When was the last time you talked to her?”
Dylan snapped. “I’ve told you. I’ve got it! I don’t need you to babysit me. I know what the stakes are. She’s going to inherit a half million dollars. Marrying her is worth it to get my hands on that money. Honestly, I don’t even know why you’re doing this. If that old lady left Haven money after only knowing her a year, imagine what she left you.”
“I know exactly what she was going to leave me. A few measly hundred thousand dollars. Why settle for that when I can have access to billions through Ellis.”
Dylan laughed sarcastically. “The man’s a confirmed bachelor. He’s not going to marry you or Haven. So, you’re wasting your time. But, it’s your time.” He shrugged. “Don’t worry about sending a gift to my wedding, though.”
“At this rate, you won’t be getting married either. The reading of the will is in three days. Do you think Haven is going to want or have a need to marry you once she inherits all that money?”
Dylan’s face tightened.
“Yeah. Exactly. She might have feelings for you. That may have clouded her judgment, but don’t take her for a fool.”
His eyes narrowed. Vanessa may have just pushed him a little too far. “Get out of my car.” The low growl of his voice was a little frightening.
Vanessa glared at him, and got out. But, before she left, she reminded him one last time. “Three days. You have three days until the reading of the will.” She slammed the door shut.
Dylan’s tires spun on the lightly snow-covered ground and kicked flakes up into Vanessa’s face before speeding off. She watched until the brake lights were no longer visible. For the first time, Vanessa wondered if she’d done the right thing when she’d gone to the gym that night to meet Dylan. Maybe she should have handled her Haven problem on her own.
